FAQs for Researchers and Healthcare Professionals

Answers to common questions from researchers and clinicians about DISCOVER-ME’s cientific programme, methods, data, and cresearch outputs.

“Most discoveries even today are a combination of serendipity and of searching.”

– Siddhartha Mukherjee

DISCOVER-ME aims to identify and validate the biological mechanisms underlying ME/CFS and use these findings to support better diagnosis and future treatment approaches. The project brings together clinical data and biological research across five key domains: (epi)genetic, immune , metabolic, neuroendocrine and vascular.
Its core objectives are to identify biological signals associated with ME/CFS, validate promising findings across patient cohorts, samples and biobanks, define biologically meaningful patient subgroups, and translate validated discoveries towards biomarkers, diagnostic tools and future clinical applications.

The consortium uses standardised clinical and laboratory methods across multiple European biobanks and research sites, alongside computer simulation of more than 9,000 known active substances as part of a systematic drug repurposing approach.

Data collection and protection follow Horizon Europe requirements for data management and GDPR compliance; further detail on specific data governance arrangements will be published as the project progresses.

Outputs are expected to underpin future biomarker-guided clinical trials and precision approaches to drug repurposing and therapeutic development, with results published through open access channels in line with Horizon Europe’s Open Science requirements.
